Rafael Palmeiro Corrales (Born in La Habana, Cuba on September 24, 1964-) became only the fourth player in Major League history to become a member of the 500 Home Run Club and the 3,000 Hit Club. Palmeiro was an All-American at Mississippi State University and was originally picked by the New York Mets in the 8th round of the 1982 amateur draft, though he did not sign. The Chicago Cubs eventually selected him in the first round (22nd pick) in the 1985 amateur draft. He played for the Cubs (1986-1988), Texas Rangers (1989-1993, 1999-2003), and the Baltimore Orioles (1994-1998, 2004-2005). He led the American League in hits (191) in 1990 and doubles (49) in 1991, slamming his 500th home run in 2003 and his 3,000th hit in 2005. Having played in the outfield, first base, and as a designated hitter, Palmeiro was a four-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove Award winner, and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. Palmeiro never officially retired from Major League baseball but had not taken the field since 2005, and holds a .288 batting average with 3,020 hits, 569 home runs and 1,835 RBI.
